About phonetic text

Phonetic text is neutral. It is like a sound recoding. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) can be used for almost any language. Simplified Standard Sound Symbols (S4) can only be used for mainstream American and British speech, but S4 is far more suitable for teaching English pronunciation.

Most countries have their own official spelling and pronunciation systems, but Britain does not. As soon as a British person starts speaking, you immediately know their social class. Maybe it would be better if pronunciation were learnt in British schools, and people were put on the same social standing. Phonetic text could be use for this, but that is a matter for the government.

Every EFL teacher needs to consciously know the sounds of standard American and British speech
